The Logistics Safety Specialist will provide oversight to a DOT safety process.
The Logistics Safety Specialist will be primarily be responsible for providing local DOT compliance support, training non-driver personnel and regulated-drivers, inspecting commercial motor vehicles for compliance, and auditing terminals/fleets for DOT compliance. Position will interact with all levels of the organization on a routine basis including members of the senior management team. He or she will also work with division operations and safety employees to coordinate and manage and ensure Vulcan Materials regulated-fleets operated in compliance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
Education, Experience, Skills Required
BS/BA in business administration, logistics, construction management or related degree is desirable or an equivalent combination of training and work experience.
Minimum of three (3) years work experience in logistics and DOT-regulated fleets.
Previous Smith System Certification is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of DOT compliance, analyzing driver logs, workers compensation, managing drug/alcohol program and maintaining driver qualification files.
Environmental and safety regulations in trucking and terminal operations.
DOT, OSHA and MSHA rules and regulations;
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively interact with all levels of the organization.
Able to relate to all levels of people and represent Vulcan in a professional manner
Understand, interpret, and apply policies and procedures;
Possess effective presentation and interpersonal skills appropriate to all levels of the organization.
Good organization and planning skills;
Establish practices and develop resources to meet or exceed goals and objectives.

Intermediate experience in using personal computers and applications
Vehicle Inspections -- ensure compliance with applicable state and federal DOT regulations by performing scheduled and random inspections of DOT regulated vehicles.
Regulatory Knowledge and Compliance – full understanding and comprehension of all applicable state and federal DOT regulations that impact our businesses.
Audits & Inspections – help insure compliance (both paperwork and facilities) with Vulcan standards and external requirements. Conduct mock audits. Insure follow through on identified items.
Accident Investigations – conduct investigations (with assistance of outside personnel as needed) of accidents and develop accident prevention measures to share with all personnel.
Safety Meetings & Training – conduct safety meetings and assist facilities with safety meeting topics and delivery as well as annual and as-needed training programs to include delivering the Smith System driver training.
Driving Safety – conduct defensive driving training programs and identify ways to improve driving habits of all drivers
Claims Management – manage liability claims and, in conjunction with operations management, develop approaches to reduce liability and windshield claim experience
Communication - develop relationships with applicable enforcement entities (state or federal) and operations management. Provide communications to the local operations team regarding pending regulatory changes that impacts the team locally.
